It’s that time of year again, when we sit back and reflect on the year that has been. It is also the time of year when the design savvy and fashion forward, start looking toward the new year, anxiously awaiting the arrival of new trends!
New Colour Trend- Radiant Orchid
Pantone , the global authority in all things colour, have predicted the Colour of the year for 2014 to be Radiant Orchid. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone says “ Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination ….An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”
Radiant Orchid is a mix of purple, pink and fuchsia. It’s certainly a bold colour, and perhaps not for everyone, however I do believe that if it is tempered with soft greys, blacks and whites, it can actually be quite beautiful. As always, experiment with new colours first by using the colour through your home with accents in accessories ( so much easier than a purple feature wall after all ! )
Graphic prints will also be huge next year. This will be in the way of Asian inspired, bold geometric shapes, and the popularity of Aztec prints will really hit an all-time high. We will see these bold prints in tiles, fabric, artwork and even kitchen splash backs. Again, a potentially tricky trend to master in your home, so why not consider seeking the advice from an experienced decorator to avoid making your house look like a colourful pattern-clashing disaster!
Masculinity within the Home
As society is changing, we are consistently seeing the (long awaited!!) return of the man to the home. As An increasingly present presence around the home, we are seeing the male influence starting to rub off within interior trends, as they are taking more interest and pride in their surrounds. This is seeing a resurgence of a strong masculine style and deep colour tones. Try out this trend with darker walls and accessories in rich chocolates and cheeky charcoals. This is quite an elegant and understated style, mixing darker colours likes greys and blacks with minimal sleek lines. It’s certainly a visually pleasing style that both men and women can enjoy equally.
Texture will also be huge in 2014. From rustic recycled timbers, to dense textured floor rugs, there will most certainly be a flood of tactile products on the market next year. Consider adding a sheepskin throw over a suede sofa, and you will be right on-trend. Select special one-off handmade recycled timber piece of furniture, rich in warm tones and texture. Create an environment of warmth and relaxation.
Rock and Roll Art
Certainly not for the faint hearted, another trend we will see is Rock and Roll! This trend can be created in your home with the use of neon lights and deconstructed statement artwork . Graffiti on the wall will really give your home a rock and roll edge, but in all honesty, is perhaps left to Flinders lane. You can create a stylish rock and roll interior with tastefully framed Warhol prints, an antique armchair with studded detail, and statement cushions.
So as we bid farewell to the wonderful year that was 2013, we eagerly anticipate 2014 and experimenting with some new and fun trends.
Merry Christmas, and all the best for the New Year !
