Latest Furniture Design Trends For 2014

Increasingly it seems, the trends from runway to décor are being translated quicker and quicker and this year is no exception! 2014 will see some gorgeous trends emerging in furniture and home décor as a whole. Some of the highlight trends for the forthcoming year are outlined below.

A perennial favourite of mine, I am delighted to see that this style is going to feature so strongly in furniture design this year. Glamorous furniture is all about clean modern lines and clever timeless design utilizing sophisticated materials. The exclusive DeSede Swiss furniture company has unveiled a beautiful handcrafted sofa that embodies all of these things.

Continuing on from the metallic trend, which was very strong in interior decoration last year, we are now seeing not only metallic furniture as an emerging trend ,but surprisingly, we will see furniture pieces transformed into a special piece with the use of metallic fabric and interestingly, metallic leather !These statement pieces are sure to bring any space to life. Fresh from Maison &Objet 2014 are the gorgeously quirky ISO A & B tables by the prolific Parisian designers POOL in collaboration with Petite Friture. These little tables feature gold, silver and bronze, and bold graphics (also bang on trend!) Whilst not in Australia yet, keep an eye out as I am sure these will be snapped up fresh from the fair, ready for local distribution.

Nordic design has always been embraced by the fashion pack, and this year we will see this trend push to the forefront of must have furniture items. The lovely blonde timbers associated with Scandinavian furniture will be much more popular than the dark tones that have previously saturated the market. The great thing with light timbers is they work beautifully with neutral palettes. At the Illustrious Stockholm furniture Fair, Enea released some blonde timber furniture using timber from sustainable forests. The Ema chair in particular is of note due to it simple form, stackability and lightness.

As mentioned in a previous blog, the official colour of the year is Radiant Orchid, however it is blues in all shades that are pushing to the forefront of furniture colour trends for 2014. Turquoise and navy will be the predominate shades, however blue in all its beauty will be trending. Why not check out Kartells playful and colourful range of versatile pieces. Available through Space Furniture Australia wide, you can easily buy some fun and fashionable pieces that will see you be able to provide your home with a bold pop of blue ! I am particularly loving the TipTop table

Floral trends are in fashion for 2014 and this applies to interiors too. The trend will see contemporary romantic vintage pieces mixed with contemporary furnishings and vibrant colors mixed with neutrals. Fun and flirty this is a feminine trend that will create a playful feel to any interior. I love the idea of not only buying key accent pieces of furniture upholstered in floral fabric, but also using a luxurious rug designed by a famous designer from Designer Rugs. Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa has created the beautiful Ayame round rug:

Furniture that is flexible and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications will become increasingly popular this year. The ever inspirational Karim Rashid has won the Good Design Award for his Sloo Chair. Made of polyethylene resin, this beautifully designed chair is perfect for indoors or outdoors due to the materials resistance to impacts and extreme temperatures. The good range of colours makes this chair easily able to be co-ordinated with any interior or exterior. Available in Australia exclusively through Kezu, this versatile statement piece will surely make an impact in any contemporary setting.
