The brief
This project was commissioned as a long‑term family home for parents with teenage and young adult children, with the brief focused on creating a calm, well‑zoned environment that supports both shared living and independence. Located on a busy Kew road, privacy and acoustic performance were key considerations, alongside natural light, cross‑ventilation and strong connection to outdoor space. The brief called for a ground‑floor master suite with direct access to a private garden, while providing a distinct upstairs zone for the children, including a second living area. Entertaining, storage and everyday functionality were also central to the design, along with the inclusion of a pool as part of family life.
Our approach
The design responds with a carefully planned home that uses a modest site fall to subtly step levels and achieve increased ceiling heights, enhancing light and spatial quality without over‑complicating the form. A high front fence, acoustic treatments and layered landscaping create a private garden sanctuary at the front of the home, which the ground‑floor master suite opens directly onto, offering retreat from the street. Family living spaces connect seamlessly to the rear garden and pool, supporting relaxed everyday use and entertaining. Upstairs, the children’s accommodation is zoned with a secondary living space, allowing independence while maintaining connection to the home as a whole. A restrained, light material palette reinforces a calm, private atmosphere throughout, resulting in a home that is both protective and open, tailored to the family’s current and future lifestyle.
