a happy place

the brief

Twelve years ago, we created a family home for Terry and Kaylene. When they decided to downsize, they returned to DL, asking us to transform their 90’s era St Kilda Penthouse.

Since the clients were already in residence, we decided on a staged approach to the renovation, beginning with the galley laundry that Kaylene had described as soul-crushing. She asked us to transform the dysfunctional room into her happy place featuring her signature colours of pink and brushed gold.

This project has been especially poignant for our clients and our team at Destination Living. Just prior to commencing work on-site, Kaylene passed away suddenly, and the project was halted. We were heartened when Terry returned to us some months later and explained that he had decided to resume the renovation in Kaylene’s memory.
It has been both an honour and a pleasure to work with Terry and his family to create Kaylene’s dream space.

our approach

Our team designed an inviting, luxurious space packed with clever cabinetry to make laundry day a breeze.

Polytec Chifley thermolaminated door panels are accented with brushed brass handles, the slim panel line design provided the perfect modern detail to elevate the space. The addition of a custom arch panel line that spans the overhead cabinets blends harmoniously with the Chifley design. This accent is echoed in a snug nighttime nook for their beloved pug, Ralphie.
To accommodate an ironing station in the narrow space, we added a pop-up mid-size ironing board in a pull-out drawer. Dual hampers are hidden away in pull-out cabinets, allowing for the concealment of clutter. Extra folding and laundry space is provided by slimline pull-out benches in front of the washer and dryer. The existing 250mm basin was replaced with a generous 600mm brushed brass laundry sink with matching tapware and an indoor hanging rail.

Pink and gold tones continue through the mother of pearl penny wall tiles, which echo and reflect the 2-pac custom finish of the cabinetry and the terrazzo concrete floor tiles.
